The National General Certificate is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK with over 150,000 people having gained the award since it was launched in 1989.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate meets the academic requirements for Technician membership (TechIOSH) of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and Associate membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

It provides a basic grounding in health & safety essentials in the following areas:

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop, promote and communicate an effective health and safety culture in an organisation.
  • Identify the key features of a health and safety policy, the preparations and performance review of a health and safety audit. Understand the importance of proactive and reactive health and safety monitoring measures.
  • Identify hazards in the workplace and carry out risk assessments, record findings and review procedures.
  • Advise on strategies for controlling hazards, reducing risks and applying safe systems of work.
  • Identify fire hazards and consequential risks, advise on measures to minimise fire risks and develop fire procedures.
  • Identify ill health effects of physical processes of work and the environment and recommend suitable measures to combat risks.
  • Explain the processes and procedures for investigating and reporting accidents and incidents at work.


Unit 1 of NEBOSH National General Certificate 1: Management of Health and Safety

  • The syllabus covers:

  • Monitoring review and audit
  • Incident and accident investigation, recording and reporting


Unit 2 of NEBOSH National General Certificate: Controlling Workplace Hazards

  • Movement of people -hazards and control
  • Manual and mechanical handling, hazards and control
  • Work equipment hazards and control
  • Electrical hazards and control
  • Fire hazards and control
  • Chemical and biological health, hazards and control
  • Physical and psychological health, hazards and control
  • Construction activities, hazards and control

The practical examination is normally carried out at the delegate's work premises and involves a physical inspection of a workplace to assess the hazards. It is designed to test delegate's ability to complete a health and safety assessment and produce a management style report on their findings.

Delegates are assessed with written examinations for each of the two taught units. A unit Certificate is issued denoting successful achievement of each unit. A Certificate award is issued on completion of the two units and the practical assessment.

Certification
Exam - There are two 2-hour written papers - Management of Safety and Health, Controlling Hazards and a practical assessment has to be submitted. Delegates are awarded the Certificate on successful completion.
